[ at first, brienne stands there, looking stupidly around herself for her friend who has-- oh, there she is. but being 6'3", even when you aren't a blond woman in a dress that doesn't quite fit, makes you stand out. hiding has never been an option for her.
brienne lumbers over to the corner booth and with an amount of grace that's a bit surprising, she folds herself into it even as she's looking openly around them. ]
Coffee's great. Are you all right? [ she takes a moment to frown at her friend, whose body language looks like defensive and afraid to someone like brienne. she scowls around them, looking for whoever might mean jane harm. ]
[ It's not like Jane's that successful in hiding herself since she's 5'10", but hey, she's desperately trying to disappear into the seat or under the table anyway. Tall awkward island girls, hurray. ]
Please stop looking around. I'm fine, I'm fine. [ She's not fine. But she's not in danger, at least. ] Okay, I'll get you your coffee. In a bit. Just... is he still looking this way?
[ As if you're not going to have to walk up to the counter and actually talk to him to place your order, Janey. Geez. ]
i love jane more and more with each new tag btw <333
[ is jane just the opposite of brienne? tall but pretty and lovely and attracts good attention? they really are just opposite island ladies, no wonder they've gravitated together so swiftly!!! ]
You mean the man I'm currently stuck in an awkward staring contest with?
[ spoilers: she did not stop looking around. double spoilers: she and this man are kind of just scowling at each other, broodily. brienne is not the sharpest tool in the shed, and she's a bit slow on the uptake so when she recognizes him, she whispers harshly: ]
...Seven. Is that Jon Snow? Why is he coming over here?
thank u <333 she's great, until canon screws her over and has her pull an s8 daenerys lol
[ People say it's her eyes. And the way she does her father's trademark lopsided grin so well.
Staring contest has her sit up suddenly, though, because WHAT THE FRAK, BRIENNE. She just said to stop looking around! But then her friend says his name and pretty much all her thoughts fly out the window in panic. She also blushes so hard, she might as well be glowing. ]
Keep it down! [ Insert shushing noises. Which only make the people nearby look at their direction. Very unhelpful. ] Yeah, it's Jonβ wait, what do you mean he's comingβ
[ And then she turns to look, because she's dumb like that. ALERT, ALERT. ]
[ Whoops, too late. Their eyes meet, so she waves shyly, nevermind that her cheeks feel like they're on fire. And he actually waves back in that awkward adorable way of his and, holy kriff, she just can't. She has it bad for serious, broody types okay? ]
Shut up. I'm not. I'm just... it's nothing!
[ Nothing, yeah right. Why are you still watching him, Jane? He's just busing a table. ]
[ brienne isn't the savviest creature in the world, but even she Notices what she should, slouching her chair with her chin tucked and her eyes darting back and forth between jon and jane like she's watching a particularly compelling tennis match.
she's also bad at hiding her emotions, the main of which is currently surprised delight. jane being shy??? in this economy??? brienne can't help but tease jane for her ogling-- ]
[ There are very few people and things in the world that can reduce Jane to a shy, bumbling idiot. Brienne is lucky to bear witness to such a historic sight. ]
I'm notβ [ It's not about the bussing! He's just super cute and adorable and look at that broody intense serious look of concentrationβ’οΈ. ] I just... he'sβ
[ Enjoy it while it lasts, Brienne. And the best part? She's super distracted that you can ask her anything and she's going to answer you without blinking. ]
[ there are so many starks, being associated with any of them doesn't really guarantee acquaintance with all of them. and brienne's nosy but not exactly the most direct. curious, let's call her. ]
Mom's friends with Ned Stark. We've had dinner with his family a couple of times.
[ Jane's parents are pretty well-connected, so she knows a good deal of people. Which she normally doesn't have any problem dealing with, except for a certain someone.
Anyway, she senses that Brienne's started to grill her for information but alas she's too embarrassed to deal with it, so she actually gets to her feet and grabs her purse. ] I'll get our coffee.
[ Only to realize halfway to the counter that holy kriff she'll have to talk to Jon now, won't she?? And she actually turns on her heel to go back around as though she'd forgotten something on their table or in her car... only to change her mind again and resume her procession to the counter and place their order.
The encounter ends up going surprisingly well, except that it takes a little longer than usual since there's a lot of head ducking and blushing and stammering between both parties. Thankfully she's the latest customer and no one else is standing in line.
When Jane slides back into her seat she looks absolutely mortified at what she'd just done. Brienne could be taking a video of her and she won't notice, at least not it right away, as she's still trying to wrap her mind around what just happened. ]
[ the atmosphere of the little shop lends itself to this quiet and awkward encounter between the two of them. the soft acoustic music and pleasant aroma serve as a backdrop, along with the exit of a few patrons that leaves only them, a harried-looking student in the corner, and jon manning the counter.
it also spotlights jane's nervous energy as she flits about, looking a bit like a confused kitten for a moment. brienne tries not to laugh but her hand is conspicuously covering her mouth when jane returns, in her usual habit of hiding her teeth when she smiles.
after a deep breath, she regards jane silently for only a moment. ]
I feel compelled to remind you that you chose this spot...
[ Jane doesn't say anything for a while longer. It even seems like she's not heard Brienne at all, just staring ahead like she's somewhere else though she's physically in the premises.
And then she lets out a noise that's a cross between a giggle and a squeal. It's not loud enough to make heads turn, but there's no way Brienne's missing it. If she could bounce on her seat without being obvious, she'd probably be doing that already, too. ]
He asked me out. [ She puts her hands to her cheeks and pats herself several times, still unable to believe it. ] Holy kriff, he asked me out.
[ brienne's eyebrows lift but rather than blurting out something she presses her lips together. stock still, only her eyes flick from jane to the counter where jon seems to be rather bouncy for his usual broody behavior.
a corner of her mouth ticks up when she turns her attention properly back to jane. this has certainly taken the sour out of brienne's failure of a night. ]
Hmm. Perhaps he's not as dull as everyone says. [ only a mild roast, if the twinkle in brienne's eye means anything. ] When are you going?
[ Hey he's not dull thank you very much. But, look, he can probably do no wrong in her eyes until she gets over the infatuation phase, anyway. ]
Tomorrow afternoon, before his shift. Just chillin' at the park with our dogs, nothing fancy. [ She wrings her hands nervously. Nevermind that the appointment in question is not until the next day. ] He... also said there's a thing later at one of the clubs downtown that Robb got him some passes for, but he didn't want to cut our girls' night short, so...
[ lovingly reproving, brienne fixes her friend with a softer version of the scowl she uses on the unruly youths she wrangles at work. this will not do. just because brienne had a disaster of a blind date does not mean jane should be denied potential makeouts. at the very least emphatic moon eyes... ]
You've rescued me, and a job well done at that. [ the twinkle comes back to her eye as she smirks. ] My knight in shining armor should go and get her reward, don't you think?
[ She doesn't get it at first. Why are you looking at her like that, Brienne? He's being very nice and letting them have the rest of their girls' night in peace. ]
... Oh. But I can'tβ I can't just leave you. I'm not that kind of friend.
[ At the very least she'll stay with her for coffee and then drive her home. He's still got some time before his shift ends, anyway. ]
forceshadowed β

[ the pot is calling the kettle broody, here, brienne... anyway he waves awkardly and she raises a hand to awkwardly wave back and then
he veers to the right to bus a table??? maybe brienne uhhh catastrophized a little. she doesn't giggle. well. not very loudly anyway. ]
